This page is intended to help you know who we are and our qualifications and experience as antiques dealers.

We are Susan and Jim McDowell.  Antiques are a passion with us.  We  have been antiques collecting more than 30 years and dealers more than twelve.  We moved to the Shenandoah and opened Valley of Virginia Antiques November 1996.

We believe that 'quality' antiques make excellent investments.  You can enjoy them everyday knowing your financial outlay will compound generously over time.  They also provide lasting value that can be passed on to loved ones.

Susan McDowell
Susan has a degree in Home Economics   where she first studied interior design,  furniture styles, textiles, merchandising, etc.   She subsequently took several interior  design courses and gained practical  experience working as an assistant to an  interior designer.

Susan, fully trained by Colonial Williamsburg, served as a costumed interpreter of colonial history, government,  architecture, design, social customs and  period furniture styles, china, silver, pottery,  fabrics, paint, wall paper, etc.
Susan first managed Petersburg, Virginia's Antiques Mall, then  operated her own booths in several malls.  She now manages  Valley of Virginia Antiques.  Her hobbies, in addition to
 antiques,  include quilting and gardening.

  Jim McDowell
Jim served as an Army Officer for 30  years.  He has a degree in economics and an MBA.  He collected antiques with Susan and has read extensively about early US  history and antiques.  Jim has 20+ years experience repairing and refinishing antiques.  He now helps Susan buying, repairing, and refinishing antiques and assists her with shop keeping.   Jim built and maintains Valley of Virginia  Antiques Website. His  hobbies include antiques, gardening, bicycling, hiking, reading  and old house restoration.
