Repair to Bottom Tin Right Side

Back Splash, Remnants of Decoration
12 Tin Blue Piesafe
Circa:  Mid 19th C., Virginia

A nice primitive blue 12 tin piesafe with remnants of salmon splatter decoration
Original blue paint and salmon decoration, original hand punched tins outside mounted
Double pegged and mortised joinery, three wide board shelves, three board back
Poplar and pine woods, small splash back at top, square cut nails

Note:  This was the most sought piece at a large country auction.  Jim believes this was because it is so representative of an authentic country primitive piece.  It was not 'professionally' made, rather he suspects it could have been a 'winter' project for a country family; the father doing the carpentry with his wife and children punching the tins and then painting and decorating the piece.  Jim scraped away four coats of paint to get to the blue paint and salmon decoration:  a yellow, brown and two shades of green.  Only traces of the salmon 'splatter' decoration remains as shown on the splash back photo.

Condition:  Good, very solid.  There is rust on tins and rusted through on bottom
two right tins.  A screen was applied to the bottom tin

Dimensions:  40" wide, 18 1/2" deep; 54 1/2" high
            Two 21" d shelves, one 14" d

Price: $2200, Item Nr:  7709
